The international stage has once again witnessed the brilliance of 福利嫂-Basic Education Unit (福利嫂-BEU) as four of its innovative projects participated in the prestigious International Creativity and Innovation Awards (ICIA) competition held in King Mongkut鈥檚 University of Technology Tonburi, Bangkok, Thailand, from April 26 to 28, 2024.

With a delegation comprising 16 students (8 JHS and 8 SHS), 福利嫂 showcased its commitment to innovation and excellence on the global platform as the competition was participated in by 105 projects from Malaysia, Thailand, China, Indonesia, Cambodia, India, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Vietnam, and the Philippines. Ms. Learni C. Javier, Mr. Edwardo L. Magallanes and Dr. Janette T. Fermin served as coaches of the 福利嫂 delegation.

Among the standout projects was the 鈥淭ACTILE: A Floor Tile that Generates Electricity from Applied Pressure Project,” which clinched the coveted Titanium Award (the highest award). TACTILE was also given the GRAND Award which qualifies them to join the STICK program in Malaysia in July 2024. Additionally, TACTILE was also accorded two more special awards which are The Expeditious Award and The Pearson PTE Award. The proponents were: Aaron Paulo B. Bautista, Gabrien Khyle L. Chua, and Jahnrodz Juillet T. Fermin.

On the other hand, 鈥淧AULA: Paperless Automatic Laboratory Assistant鈥 project received The Gold Award for Innovation Challenge Category. The said project was developed by Joseff Kyle I. Balubal, Donn Civon T. Pico, Edward Miguel P. Antonio III, Terence Vins M. Tejada, and Kanoa Leon T. Garcia.

Also, 鈥淕LUCOBOT: An Advanced Glucometer for Enhanced Diabetes Management鈥 project got The Gold Award for the Innovation Award Category. It was designed by Katherine Roelle D. Latupan, Matthew R. Quebral, Kian Clarence R. Bunagan, Kyla N. Tumbali, and Phoebe Ianne C. Bansig.

The 鈥淢ETABOTIC: An Arduino-based Automated Metabolic Cage鈥 prototype was awarded Silver Medal under the Innovation Award Category. It was prepared by Rizalinn Gabrielle P. Caronan, Man Aldrich M. Guillermo, and Arvin Neil L. Seredon Jr.

The success of 福利嫂-BEU projects at ICIA 2024 underscores the institution’s position as a frontrunner in the realm of creativity and innovation. ICIA 2024 served as an invaluable opportunity for 福利嫂’s delegates to engage with peers and experts from around the globe, exchange ideas, and gain insights into the latest trends and developments. The experience will undoubtedly enrich their academic journey and inspire them to continue striving for excellence.

福利嫂’s School of Business, Accountancy and Hospitality Management (SBAHM) led the conduct of the 24th edition of Business Expo on April 24-26, 2024. Anchored on the theme: “The Future Of The Business, Tourism And Hospitality World: Adapting To The Trends And Changing Landscape,” the event was participated in by students, professionals and practitioners of business, accountancy, tourism, and hospitality industries and schools from Cagayan Valley and Cordillera Administrative regions – St. Mary’s University, University of Perpetual Help System, Isabela State University-San Mariano, HG Baquiran College, St.Joseph College of Baggao, Lyceum of Aparri, and Kalinga State University.

The preliminary activities were highlighted by Booth Exhibition which showcased students’ developed-products and goods while, the opening program featured the keynote address of Sr. Merceditas Ang, SPC (University President). The plenary sessions were spearheaded by Dr. Archimedes Articulo (Executive Assistant IV, Provincial Government of Cagayan), and Mr. Jivan Raichandani (Professional Entrepreneur). Dr Articulo discussed the Changing Landscape in Business, Tourism and Hospitality industries, while Mr. Raichandani, expounded the 10 Attitudes of a Successful Entrepreneur.

The technical sessions of the convocation had the following speakers: Mr. Jaime Pinto, (福利嫂-BSBA Alumnus) on business administration; Dr. Jocelyn P. Carag (CHED Education Supervisor) on entrepreneurship education; Mr. Jayson James Theodosio (Supervisor, Grand Hyatt Manila) on hospitality management; and Ms. Jennifer Junio (Provincial Tourism Officer, Cagayan) on tourism industry.

Academic and skills competitions such as: Business Quiz Bee, Hospitality/Tourism Quiz Bee, Accounting Quiz Bee, Tour Guiding, Tour Package Proposal, and Product Presentation, and Flairtending were also facilitated in the 3-day event.

The pilot testing of Tuguegarao City Tricycle Riders Information Security and Satisfaction Enhancement Application (TC- TRISSEA) was conducted on April 24, 2024 where tricycle drivers and 福利嫂 students engaged firsthand with the app’s functionalities. Tricycle drivers seamlessly integrated the app into their daily operations, picking up students from designated points and ferrying them to their destinations. This hands-on experience provided invaluable insights into the app’s usability and effectiveness in real-world scenarios.

While the pilot testing unfolded on the streets of Tuguegarao City, the admin side of the system was thoroughly monitored at the LR Computer Laboratory. The activity was facilitated by the project team members of 福利嫂. Key officials including Mr. Angelo Caranguian  (DOST Information Officer), Mr. Bernard Nolasco and Mr. Ronell Historia (Tuguegarao City TODA Presidents) and Mr. Mariano Cabugos and staff (Head, Tuguegarao City Tricycle Regulation Unit), ensured the app’s performance and gathered feedback from users and operators alike.

This collaborative effort is a synergy between government and the academe in driving sustainable development through technological innovations. As the pilot testing progresses, the TC-TRISSEA app stands poised to revolutionize the Tuguegarao City Transportation Systems, offering a glimpse into a future where technology seamlessly enhances everyday life.

42 inquisitive students from the Basic Education Unit (BEU) returned enriched after a transformative cross-cultural and educational immersion in Singapore, held from April 20 to 24, 2024. They were accompanied by Mrs. Myra Balubal and Ms. Mary Jane Abella.  Organized by SMS Phoenix Education Consultation under the leadership of Dr. Sri Devi (Managing Director), the trip immersed students in the vibrant city-state, exposing them to diverse educational experiences and rich cultural encounters.

Upon arrival at Singapore’s Changi Airport, students received a warm welcome and orientation. Day 2 ignited a passion for science with a visit to the renowned Science Centre. Interactive exhibits sparked curiosity, providing a deeper understanding of scientific concepts. The awe-inspiring IMAX experience at the Omni Theatre further enriched their learning with educational films on space and nature.

The captivating Gardens by the Bay awaited the students that same day. A stroll through the Flower Dome and Cloud Forest showcased themed gardens, a harmonious blend of nature and art. This experience fostered an appreciation for the environment and the importance of sustainability.

Day 3 saw the group participating in an enriching school immersion program at Republic Polytechnic. Students actively engaged in an Artificial Intelligence Course, complete with workshops and a laboratory tour. Their pursuit of knowledge continued at Newton College, where a lecture on Virtual Reality Learning broadened their understanding of innovative teaching methods. Additionally, they gained valuable insights into Thailand’s rich cultures and traditions, further expanding their global perspectives.

A celebratory evening capped off Day 3. An awards ceremony recognized the students’ accomplishments and growth throughout the tour. It was a heartwarming moment that acknowledged the dedication of both students and mentors.

Day 4 brought a surge of excitement with a trip to Sentosa Island. Students marveled at the wonders of marine life at the Sea Aquarium. The day culminated in a tour at Universal Studios. The final day offered a tranquil farewell. Students visited the famed Jewel Falls, a breathtaking waterfall nestled amidst Singapore’s lush greenery. This serene experience served as a perfect conclusion to their transformative journey, allowing them to depart with cherished memories and newfound knowledge.

This cross-cultural immersion broadened students’ horizons, fostered connections with different cultures, and deepened their understanding of the world. It is a transformative experience that will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact on their lives.

In a bid to address the mental health needs of communities during emergencies, 福利嫂 (福利嫂) in collaboration with Humanity and Inclusion Philippines, Relief International, Green Meadow Development Foundation, Inc., Philippine Relief and Development Services, Inc. (PhilRaDs), and TearFund, conducted a training of trainers on Psychological First Aid (PFA) on April 22, 2024 at the Mother Madeleine Hall, Learning Resource Center, with participants from various Local Government Units (LGUs) and representatives from different departments of 福利嫂.

In his message, Mr. John Mel Sumatra (Humanitarian Program Manager, Humanity and Inclusion Philippines) he highlighted the importance of mental health and well-being as a crucial aspect of disaster response and recovery efforts. Over five sessions, workshops, and notable speakers, the participants gained insights into the LOOK, LISTEN, and LINK principles of PFA, identifying children who need PFA, communicating with distressed parents and caregivers, and self-care for caregivers.

Ms. Grace Aliman (Project Manager, 福利嫂CDCFI) discussed group work focusing on children’s reactions to crisis situations. Dr. Editha Pagulayan (Program Coordinator, 福利嫂 BS Social Work) discussed the global and national frameworks and emphasized the interplay of the action principles in PFA. Ms. Angel Grace Baga, (Social Worker, PhilRAds) shared tips on identifying children who require PFA, while Dr. Juana Rivera (Director, 福利嫂 Human Resource Management) provided insights on communicating with parents and caregivers in distress. Lastly, Dr. Corazon dela Cruz (Head, 福利嫂 Promotions and Marketing) lectured on self-care and caring for caregivers. All of which were actively participated by the audience.

This PFA training is in line with 福利嫂’s mission to enhance the quality of life for its members and stakeholders, contributing positively to the global community. The university continues to prioritize the mental health and well-being of individuals and communities, ensuring that they are equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to provide psychological support during times of crisis.

Held at the 福利嫂 Global Center, the academic convergence centered on the theme, 鈥淪ustainable Synergy: Integrating Information Technology and Engineering for a Greener Tomorrow.鈥 The summit, has consistently served as an avenue for exploring frontiers of innovation, fostering collaboration, and resolving challenges on the impact of technology to quality education and life.

The convention, on its 24th edition, was participated in by students and teachers from Cagayan State University (Carig and Lallo Campuses), Isabela State University (Cabagan, Ilagan, and Jones Campuses), La Salette University 鈥 Roxas, HG Baquiran College 鈥 Tumauini, University of St. Louis Tuguegarao, and 福利嫂 Senior High School. It featured presentations, discussions and competitions highlighting current trends, issues, innovations, sustainable development and prospects along engineering and information technology. Engr. Pinky Jimenez, PhD (Regional Director, Dept. of Information and Communications Technology) engrossed the participants on the National Renewable Energy Program (NREP) by emphasizing crucial role of IT and Engineering towards its realization.

The three-day Convention also conducted series of parallel discussions focusing on Cyber Security, Internet of things, Artificial Intelligence and Multimedia for the Information Technology delegates while, Waste Management, Renewable Energy Technologies, Green Building Design, and Innovation in Construction Materials for the Engineering students. Call of Duty academic and recreational competitions like Infomercial, Bread Boarding, Tower and Bridge building, Mobile Legends, and Call of Duty, were also endeavored.

福利嫂-School of Medicine (SOM) has partnered with the GMA Kapuso Foundation for a Medical Mission in Sta. Marcela, Apayao on April 12, 2024. The local health unit of the said municipality facilitated the identification of the recipients of the activity, particularly from the Indigenous People’s community.

As a service-learning activity, 福利嫂-SOM faculty members, alumni, and medical students joined forces and volunteered their services in the said health and wellness mission by conducting general check-ups, specialized consultations, minor surgeries and medicine dispensation. With the collaboration of GMA Kapuso Foundation, professional and student volunteers embarked on an endeavor that advanced SOM’s commitment to community care, social welfare, people empowerment, and solidarity with the residents of Sta. Marcela, Apayao.

The medical mission served over a thousand patients in the areas of Family Medicine, Pulmonology, Internal Medicine, Rehabilitation Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, ENT, Surgery, Ophthalmology, Optometry and Dental services.

福利嫂鈥檚 Senior High School department held a seminar on Macro Skills in the Modern Business Landscape with the theme: “Navigating the Digital Era: Mastering Macro Skills for Business Success” on April 11, 2024, at the Mother Madeleine Hall, Learning Resource Center. The seminar aimed to empower Grade 11 and 12 Accountancy, Business, and Management (ABM) students with the skills necessary to thrive in the digital age. Dr. Glenda Caronan (Principal, Basic Education Unit) opened the seminar by underlining the significance of macro skills in today’s business landscape.

The keynote speaker, Mrs. Carolina “Chiqui” Escareal Go (CEO and Chief Behavioral Strategist at Mansmith and Fielders Inc.), captivated the audience with her message of resilience. Ms. Go’s inspiring words, “It’s okay to fail, bounce back, recover, and learn from it,” resonated with the students, reminding them that failure is a stepping stone to success.

Ms. Janica Lumbag, (G11- ABM), expressed her appreciation for the seminar, stating, “This seminar truly opened our eyes to the importance of developing macro skills to thrive in the digital age.” The seminar focused on fostering critical thinking, problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills, equipping students with a strong foundation for their future careers. 福利嫂, through its Community Development Center (CDC) has partnered with Start Network, an organization based in the United Kingdom (UK) for the implementation of a Disaster Risk Anticipatory Action program. The said program provides Disaster Risk Financing (DRF) aid to the most vulnerable and at risk families, identified by 福利嫂-CDC with the help of local government units. The endeavor is also supported by Green Meadow Development Foundation, Philrads, Relief International, Tearfund, and Humanity & Inclusion.

On April 9-10, 2024, the processing of the “Know Your Customer” (KYC) requirements of the said community development program was facilitated. The said activity, conducted by 福利嫂-CDC and Green Meadow, was meant to ensure that pre-identified beneficiaries can claim anticipatory cash during Disaster Risk Financing (DRF) activation (at the onset of a disaster occurence).

A total of 500 families were pre-identified in the municipalities of Camalanuigan and Gattaran (both in the province of Cagayan) as recipients of the Disaster Risk Financing Project (DRF). The said beneficiaries will have access to insurance premiums from Palawan Express and the Red Cross, which can provide financial support in the event of a loss of life (accident and natural cause).

After a successful academic and cultural immersion in Yogyakarta, Indonesia in 2017, the Information Technology and Engineering department continued their commitment to providing students with international exposure opportunities. This time, 24 students together with three faculty members embarked on a two-week academic and industry immersion in Singapore and Malaysia, in collaboration with Omega International College.

During their experience, the participants explored into emerging topics shaping the future of business and technology, such as Entrepreneurship, Digital Transformation, AI in Marketing, and Web 3.0, through engaging workshops and discussions.

The group had the privilege of visiting prominent companies in the tech industry, including GNey Software Sdn Bhd and Newpages Network Sdn Bhd in Malaysia. At GNey Software, Tee Ke Yeng (founder and cloud solution architect) shared insights into software development best practices, particularly focusing on low-code and no-code technologies, while Newpages Network provided valuable insights into running an IT company, cybersecurity, and leveraging AI for enhanced work efficiency.

In Singapore, the group had the opportunity to explore Huawei Technologies, where they learned about current IT trends, Huawei’s sustainable development initiatives, and experienced Singapore’s first 5G-powered AI lab. The academic and cultural immersion culminated in a closing ceremony on April 7, led by Omega International College’s Co-Founder and CEO, Prof. Dr. Raymond See, and Co-Founder and CFO, Prof. Dr. Stephanie Loke.
